Livelihoods in Coffee: Accessibility Series

Join the Barista Guild for a new instalment of Livelihoods in Coffee, an ongoing conversation within our community. This season, we’re talking all about accessibility.

Accessibility is the idea that our society, and every facet within it, works for everyone—however they live and interact within it. Accessibility looks different to everyone, and every perspective needs to be heard and taken into account when discussing accessibility.

This February and March, the Barista Guild has invited some incredible special guests to talk about many different areas of accessibility. We’ll be discussing challenges that disabled people face when it comes to working in the coffee industries, assistive technologies that are making a difference in many people’s lives, and deep-diving into inclusive recruitment, training, and company culture.

Join the conversation on Instagram Live @baristaguild, from February 24 every week until the end of March!

Episode #1

Accessibility in Coffee: A Conversation with Dreamers and Believers

In this episode Ali Chen gave us a brief introduction to this series about the rights of people with disabilities and kicks off this Livelihoods in Coffee Accessibility Series with Barista Guild's Chair Kathie Hilberg by introducing us to the Dreamers and Believers project. T’leya Scott works with people with a mental disability like Shavanda to help them perform in the workplace aiming to make decisions in an independently way. Later in the conversation they discuss the challenges and needs behind a work environment that is more accessible to this population whose needs are still in the process of being assimilated by society. Dreamers and Believers supports people with practical training to have a vocational development, with this it seeks a change in how the recruitment process is carried out, also making known the benefits that companies obtain when hiring people with a mental disability.
